CrossQuestion #01 Striking!

Welcome to a new type of post on our blog!

This is a new type of section, in which we ask you a question! What kind of question you ask? Well, anything from design decisions to new features. Hopefully this gets you more involved with the development of CrossCode and creates a nice discussion. This means we want to use your feedback for our final decision on the given topic.
We don’t know how often we will do this, so this will not be a regular thing. But whenever we feel the need of asking you, we’ll make a CrossQuestion out of it!

Let’s get right to it!

A new color for the shock effect

Some days ago Felix noticed that the color of the shock effect was actually a bit annoying. The problem is the contrast. We used blue and yellow to create a lightning strike kinda effect that was easily visible. But we went a bit overboard with that. When used in combat it was unpleasant on the eye, especially in the boss battle. Since players will be using every element as much as any other, we thought it was necessary to adjust the colors of the shock effects.

And this is where you come in!

We have new versions for the colors of the shock effect. And we ask you:

Which color to you like better?

To help you on your decision, here are some comparison shots:

Bouncing of Walls

Close Combat

Ranged Combat

As you can see, the left/top versions are a completely new idea to the shock effect. Purple is used quite often these days but it has a very unique look to it. The right/bottom ones are a similar to the original colors but more subtle. So what you think? Which version to you prefer or think looks good?

Let’s hear all them opinions!

EDIT: And for those who want to see the old version of the shock effect for comparison, here you go:

    I prefer the left version. Better contrast wich is good for me (have some problems with colors … red, green you know).
    Also it looks good I think. ^^

  • I’d say Yellow.

    Mainly because I usually associate Purple with Dark magic and attacks.

    Also since the shading of the scenery uses some Purple, it might make it difficult to see the attack in darker areas if the attack was Purple (also colorblind people may find it more difficult to contrast between 2 similar colors).

    Looks really nice. I prefer the purple effect, it seems pretty neat and the right one is a little too flashy in the long run.

    I prefer the yellow one. While they’re both nice, I tend to associate yellow with electricity. While the old effect is cool, it’s definitely a bit too much, and just having yellow is a good compromise.

    One other thing. Off topic, but I found what seems to be a minor problem in the demo. In the part after the credits where you have to walk on a light bridge thing to be able to get to a height where you can hit some switches, there is a way to not have to do that. If you spin while jumping off of the largest raised platform, (you have to time it just right) you can reach a different platform and hit the switches from there instead. The demo is still amazing though.

    • Hi there! Thanks for the note. We are already aware of this glitch and will fix this… probably. :P
      Sometimes it’s fun to keep glitches like this in the game, but in this instance it might actually break a bit too much.

    Why not both?

    My preference is the purple, but in my opinion it’d be 300% more cooler if your attack colour changed depending on what you have equipped. (Colour = element maybe?)

    • Hi!
      We do in fact use different colors per element. “Shock” is just one of 4.
      The others are:
      heat = red
      cold = blue
      wave = green
      and then there is shock with either yellow or purple.

      Admittedly, yellow might seem best fitting in terms of contrast, but in practice purple lightning can still be distinguished quite clearly from heat and cold.

        I see what you mean. I definitely like how you’ve done the yellow with the blue, but for me yellow’s never really been an electricity-like color. Maybe if you did a purple and blue combination?
        In any case, I’m unbiased. Added effects based on equipment would be awesome, if they’re not already being planned/completed.

    Yellow (:

    I prefer the purple one a little bit more, but because it’s a shock effect I would tend to the yellow. Purple just doesn’t fit for a shock effect.

    I like the old one…
    So I tend to the yellow one.

    I would prefer the original color a lot, but if you guys really think otherwise, I’d prefer the left ones – yellow is a relatable connection to shock, but I always assumed that attacks were based on simply energy for the most part.

  • I prefer the old most. Maybe the issue is that the two chosen colors are yellow and blue? Does the yellow not provide the irritating effect? Maybe it’s the contrast between blue and yellow? How about blue/purple, or blue/orange?

    But, if you don’t want a combo color, the purple is a bit nicer than the yellow.

    i like better purple.
    the yellow one looks like a non-elemental attack for me

    Yellow looks better, in my opinion. When I think of the element “shock”, I think yellow. Purple is like the “grape” element or something equally lame.

    Yellow, while I can see the appeal purple Shock/Lightning, I think yellow might still be easier to distinguish and it fits as the fourth color better.

    Could you maybe post a comparison of Red vs. Purple? That may change my decision.

    I like the Left/Top one. You are right in the fact that it has a very unique look and I like it a lot.

  • yellow is my favorite color, so I am going to say that I am not the most unbiased color chooser here.

    on the yellow and blue while I personally like the pairing I can see that there is a problem with the attack. The problem is because the RGB colors that computers cause yellow and blue to be on opposite sides of the color wheel making them compliments.

  • Yello looks more realistic to me.

  • Yellow.

  • I prefer the yellow color

  • it would be nice to have acces to both collours (maybe with a bonus code like with the voice acting?)

  • Hey could we have the old shock effect added in as a bonus code? I love the current one, but the old has a special place in my heart

    maybe add an add-on that changes or the colour or a bonus code, although i think the yellow looks better
