[Insert Platform Name Here] When?

We will soon have something too share. Like, you know, SOON.

Hello everyball!

… Deck13 writing here today. We’re the publisher of CrossCode. We’re also handling the port to other platforms at the very moment. And all of us, here at Deck13, over at RFG, over at Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft hear your questions. Which is basically always the same: When? When will CrossCode finally be coming to consoles?

WHEN???

The answer is: Sooner than you might think. We are ready to announce an official date very soon. Maybe next week? We wanted to let you know that we will be revealing the official release date for the console version of CrossCode next Tuesday. And we always said that once we announce the releasedate, the wait will even sooner be over. This means: You won’t have to wait much longer. But we can’t go into details just yet.

What took you so long?

CrossCode was build in a custom engine written in HTML5 and JavaScript. Something which the consoles do not really support well. We had to create a compiler for it, translating everything into C++ before the game loads up. Because live compiling, which JavaScript does, is not allowed on most platforms as it opens up ways to access the deeper cores of the hardware. We even had to restart the whole process once as the first way we were going for did not work out as intended. We had to throw away roughly one year of work and start all over again.

But…

No fear. We did our homework. CrossCode has passed all console certifications. And we’re still submitting patches to the version which passed certifications. These will be available from Day 1 and your version will automatically be updated to the latest build.

Anything else

Oh yeah, while we’re at it: We have decided to bundle CrossCode on Steam with a fresh product we just launched, called Resolutiion. We think it might be something you could enjoy as you’re all fans of gorgeous pixelart.

Oh boy. I hope you’ll wait a while before going through with the physical release so the discs come fully patched and will make preserving the game easier on consoles.

I would love to read a technical post-mortem for this project. I admired you guys for making a console quality game using HTML5, but it seems like that decision might have been costly in the end.

  • Just out of curiosity, what technique did you use to transpile the JavaScript to C++? Is it still the Haxe based approach described in the Kha v HTML5 video, or something else? I know that v8 has a JITless mode now, but I doubt that would give the performance you want.

    • The video is still up to date on how everything works, wasn’t thaaaat long ago after all. And yes, V8 JITless mode is not helpful, even JIT mode would be too slow if it was allowed as was discussed in that video.
